Advocacy & Support for Teachers

Teachers are entrusted with shaping young minds and fostering an environment conducive to learning and growth. However, like any professional setting, educational settings are not immune to challenges and conflicts. Allegations within the teaching profession can arise from various sources—students, parents, colleagues, or administrators—each carrying its own implications and complexities.

Bianca, a member of the TPAA Queensland branch found herself in a situation following allegations outlined in a letter, prompting a significant response and demand for clarity.

The letter in question detailed several interactions between Bianca and a student, citing comments and actions that Bianca vehemently disputes. According to Bianca, these allegations were not presented in writing during meetings nor was she afforded a proper opportunity to respond to each claim.

Four specific points were highlighted in the letter, all of which the teacher denies vehemently. Among them, one particularly serious allegation was that the teacher allegedly incited hatred towards a student based on their race. The teacher counters this claim, asserting that their comment was innocuous and simply an observation related to a film character, devoid of any racial connotations.

Bianca expressed dissatisfaction with the process, noting discrepancies in reporting and a lack of clarity regarding disciplinary actions. She emphasised that James did not confirm certain administrative actions, such as filing a Record of Concern or intervention, as stated in the letter.

With the support of TPAA, a meeting was held with HR. Following the meeting the discrepancies in the reporting were acknowledged, leading to the redaction of the policy breach initially attributed to Bianca.
